  DID YOU KNOW
Mount Prevost was the site of an Indian legend which says that during the Great Flood, one man took refuge on top of the mountain while all others in the area perished. At the same time, two women stayed on high ground in Sooke. Later, these people met and created the modern day Cowichan Nation.

CHEMAINUS

T

his charming seaside village is a rare jewel on Vancouver Island. Entertaining, relaxing and tranquil, Chemainus is a favourite destination for families, for art lovers and for those that are just looking to explore.

Chemainus brims with artistic spirit. It started in 1982 when the people of Chemainus invited internationally known artists to use the town as a canvas. Today more than 34 murals and 12 sculptures depict the towns history and its people. Every year new artwork is added to this vibrant outdoor art gallery. Follow the footprints for a self-guided tour, or take a guided tour on the horse drawn carriage or simulated steam train.

Gift shops and art galleries abound in this creative environment, offering some of Vancouver Island’s best pottery and native and local artworks.

Chemainus celebrates its rich arts and cultural heritage with many special events over the year. Check the events calendar to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the local celebrations. And don’t miss the sights and shops in Old Town, just a short stroll through Waterwheel Park and the Gateway.

The Chemainus Theatre Festival offers professional live theatre that will entertain and inspire you. This regional theatre company stages world classics, musicals and new plays featuring professional guest artists from across North America.

If you are looking for outdoor activities, Mount Brenton Golf Course, camping, boating, fishing and trails for hiking and mountain biking are all close by.
