MILL BAY/MALAHAT

T

he Malahat offers some of the most dramatic scenery you will ever experience. Several internationally recognized resorts and retreats have chosen this location as home, because of the sheer beauty and warm climate, sheltered from the ocean winds. They include the Aerie Resort, the Prancing Horse Retreat, the Ocean View Motel and the Malahat Mountain Inn. Whether you stop for the night or to enjoy a relaxing meal, the Malahat experience is a fitting gateway to the beautiful and varied vistas that make up the Cowichan.

Mill Bay
Nestled at the foot of the Malahat is the bustling community of Mill Bay. A visit to Mill Bay rewards you with incredible views of the Gulf Islands and coastal mountains. It is accessible by road, a 40 minute drive north on a spectacular stretch of the Trans Canada Highway over the Malahat mountain. Take the time to pull over and take in the scenic views at the designated view spots. An alternative route is to relax and cross the Saanich inlet on the Mill Bay/Brentwood Bay Ferry, appropriately called Vancouver Island’s most beautiful shortcut.

For boaters, it is the perfect place to put to sea and explore the quiet inland waters of Finlayson Arm for a day of fishing, sailing or kayaking. There is a full service marina government wharf and boating ramp to meet all your boating needs.

The Mill Bay centre offers a host of services for all your shopping needs, from it’s anchor store, Thrifty’s Foods to the over 75 specialty stores providing unique gifts.

Mill Bay hosts several International events each year:
  • Cowichan goes Country, an annual country music festival. (May)
  • Brentwood Rowing Regatta hosted by the internationally acclaimed Brentwood College. (April)
  • Art Affair, featuring the best of the South Cowichan artisans and galleries along with music and refreshments. (August)
