LADYSMITH

B

uilt on the side of the hill overlooking Ladysmith Harbour, Ladysmith proudly proclaims its historic roots as well as its claim to being one of the ten prettiest towns in Canada. This delightful town with its charming Edwardian setting was originally settled at the turn of the century during the Boer War. The community was designed to house the coal miners that worked in Dunsmuir mines. When James Dunsmuir received word on March 1, 1900 that the British forces had finally relieved their besieged countrymen in Ladysmith, South Africa, he decided to name his new town Ladysmith.

The Cowichan is home to a remarkable number of resident artists and Ladysmith is no exception. While visiting the area, a stop at the studios of local potters Mary Fox and Jo and Vic Duffhues (JoVic Pottery) is a must for art lovers or anyone looking for a perfect piece for home or a special gift. Antique hunters and shoppers in general will enjoy a relaxed visit to the many unique stores that line the welcoming streets.

With its picturesque seaside location, Ladysmith is becoming a popular destination for outdoor and marine enthusiasts, and at Transfer Beach, you can rent your kayak as well as enjoy escorted kayaking tours. The warm waters of Ladysmith Harbour are perfect for swimming and the nearby Holland Creek Trail offers kilometres of quiet rainforest hiking paths.

Ladysmith offers a number of events throughout the summer that reflect the warm and inviting nature of the community.  The Christmas holiday season, is perhaps when this jewel of a community shines most brightly. Each year the Town of Ladysmith is transformed into a fairytale wonderland of lights with the annual Christmas Light-Up and the Christmas Light Harbour Cruise, in December.
